Finding a tent that works for both backpacking and car camping without breaking the bank has always been a tall order. Most tents in the under-$200 range ask you to choose: light enough to carry or comfortable enough to sleep in. The Big Agnes Blacktail 2 refuses to make that compromise, and after putting it through a full season of Virginia camping, we think it is one of the best values in outdoor shelter right now.
First Impressions Out of the Bag
The Blacktail 2 ships in a compact stuff sack that belies its interior volume. At roughly four and a half pounds for the complete setup with poles, fly, and stakes, it is not the lightest two-person tent on the market. But it is light enough that splitting the load between two hikers makes it perfectly viable for weekend backpacking trips along the Blue Ridge.
Setup took us about seven minutes the first time, and we had it down to four by the third pitch. The two-pole, semi-freestanding design is intuitive even if you have never set up a tent before, which makes it a strong choice for families and newer campers who do not want to wrestle with complicated pole configurations after a long drive to the trailhead.
Where It Shines: Space and Access
The standout feature of the Blacktail 2 is how roomy it feels inside. Big Agnes gave it two full-sized doors with matching vestibules, which solves one of the most annoying problems in tent camping: crawling over your partner at 2 AM when nature calls. Each person gets their own door, their own vestibule for storing boots and packs, and enough headroom to sit upright comfortably.
We tested the Blacktail on an April weekend at Philpott Lake, about forty minutes north of Danville. Two adults with two sleeping pads and two sleeping bags fit inside with room to spare. The interior pockets kept headlamps and phones organized, and the overhead gear loft held a paperback and a couple of snack bars within easy reach.
"A tent should feel like a refuge, not a coffin. The Blacktail gives you room to breathe, and that matters more than you think after a 12-mile day." -- Moss Mountain Outfitters Team
Weather Performance
Virginia spring weather is unpredictable, and the Blacktail got its fair share of testing. A sustained rain event hit our April campsite around midnight, dumping over an inch of rain in three hours with gusts pushing twenty miles per hour. The Blacktail held firm. No leaks at the seams, no pooling on the floor, and the vestibules kept our packs bone dry.
The full-coverage rainfly extends to the ground on all sides, which eliminates the splash-back that plagues some competitors with shorter flies. Ventilation is handled by two mesh panels in the tent body that kept condensation manageable even on a humid night when we had the fly fully deployed.

Who This Tent Is For
The Blacktail 2 is ideal for the camper who wants one tent that handles multiple situations. It is light enough for a weekend backpacking trip on the Appalachian Trail, spacious enough for car camping at Fairy Stone State Park, and durable enough to hold up season after season. If you are buying your first quality tent or replacing a budget tent that let you down, this is where we point people.
It is not the right choice for ultralight backpackers counting every gram or for winter camping in serious cold. For three-season use in the mid-Atlantic, though, it hits a sweet spot that very few tents at this price can match.
Our Verdict
At $199.95, the Big Agnes Blacktail 2 delivers the kind of quality, space, and weather protection that you would expect from a tent costing fifty to a hundred dollars more. Big Agnes has a reputation for building shelters that last, and the Blacktail continues that tradition at an accessible price.
Come see it set up in the shop at 326 Main Street. We keep a display model pitched so you can crawl inside, check the headroom, and see the vestibule space for yourself. That ten minutes of hands-on time is worth more than any review.
